New calves due June 2010 @ Grace Farm Cattle Co.

It’s official!  While the veterinarian was out giving the two heifers and the steer their starter vaccinations she performed a pregnancy check on Sabrina (Lowline Cow) and Cathy (Belted Galloway Cow).  Both are pregnant and should throw their calves around June this year!

This news was exciting for a few reasons!  First, this is the first time that the herd bull Buddy (Registered Name Utah) was put to the test and he knocked this one out of the park!  Second, this will give us our first Lowline Angus/Belted Galloway cross from Cathy.  Buddy is a great Lowline bull and Cathy is an average sized heifer so we are hopeful for a happy medium between the two in regards to size.  Hopefully the belt will be a dominant trait in the calf.  Stay tuned for more info!

Grace Farm Adds a Full Blood Lowline Steer!

Today was the day that our latest steer made his way home to Grace Farm.  He is a full blood Lowline Angus and just arrived from Seattle!

Feed Shed Construction

In an effort to cut down on daily trips to feed the cows as well as a way to create more storage for hay we recently completed the feed shed using a powder river feeder panel attached to the front.  Lots of dry hay = happy cows!

Grace Farm Cattle Company adds 2 Belted Galloways!

This last Sunday we received a call from a Belted Galloway breeder in our area and were alerted to an amazing opportunity. Cathy and AnnieA couple who live in the same town as the breeder had a 2 year old Belted Galloway cow and that cow’s 2 month old Belted Galloway heifer for sale and needed to make a deal. If they couldn’t sell them they were going to send them to auction. We immediately loaded up a trailer and headed north to see if these cows were too good to be true!

When we arrived the cows were in great health, had a number of great characteristics, and it appeared that this deal wasn’t too good to be true! Needless to say the negotiated purchase price paid for both the cow and the heifer was less than the retail price of the cow in a good market and as a bonus……we found out that the cow could potentially be pregnant again by the Belted Galloway bull that she was kept with after the birth of her heifer. This could be a 3 for 1 deal!
